On the 27th of February Blackpool FC Community Trust, Age UK, Blackpool Council and The Older Men’s Network launched the second weekly walking football session at Blackpool Sports Centre, Stanley Park.
Walking football is a slower version of the beautiful game, which is a minimal contact sport with one main difference to standard football – no running! It is a great way to keep fit, learn new skills, have fun and socialise all at the same time.
The Launch had twelve participants in attendance with some new and ‘old’ faces with players aged from 50 to 70 years old. Club Legend and Ex-Northern Ireland international Derrick Spence and Blackpool FC first team players David Goodwillie and Andy Halliday were also in attendance and really enjoyed playing the adapted game.
The evening’s session was a great success with Derrick Spence saying, “Walking football really works for people who love football but thought their days of kicking a ball about were over. I’ve loved every minute of it.”
Andy Halliday also spoke about his experience saying, “It was a very enjoyable experience and it’s good to see elders so competitive and willing to stay active.
David Goodwillie also said “I enjoyed it, maybe a little to much. It’s a great way for the elderly to stay in shape and keep busy. I will do it again someday 100%. Thanks again, Goodie.
Sessions are currently running Monday’s 12.30pm till 1.30pm and Thursday 5.30pm till 6.30pm at Blackpool Leisure Centre. Sessions are £3 each and open to anyone aged 50-plus, all standards are welcome. Call Age UK Blackpool on (01253) 622812 to book your place or for more details.
