The Extra Time programme is for over 55s with sessions taking place every Monday afternoon, 1pm – 3:00pm, at the Seasiders Bar at Blackpool Football Club.
The group is needs led and participants have an input on the activities they would like to be available during the sessions. Afternoons can include chair based exercise, dominoes, quizzes, trips, country themed afternoons, or simply coffee and a chat.
In the past, participants have enjoyed themed afternoons, sessions where new foods are tasted, with fact finding, quizzes and dancing all related to a foreign country, and groups visits to some of Blackpool’s famous heritage sites and attractions.
Blackpool FC Community Trust deliver a highly successful walking football programme for over 50’s at PlayFootball.net every week.
Walking Football is a slower version of the beautiful game, which is a minimal contact sport with one main difference to standard football – no running! It is a great way to keep fit, learn new skills, have fun and socialise all at the same time.
The first session was launched in December 2013 at Blackpool Sports Centre with the support of Age UK Blackpool President, Jimmy Armfield, Ex-England, Blackpool Player and Sports Broadcaster. “I only came to watch but once I was here I couldn’t resist joining in,” said 78-year-old Armfield. “Once a footballer always a footballer”.
Inclusion Officer Owen Coyle said, “The development of the group has been excellent and numbers are rapidly growing. It’s great to see the same faces week in week out which is building new social circles for the participants with the added benefit of improving their health at the same time”.
Sessions run every Monday 4.30pm till 5.30pm and Thursday 4.15pm till 5.15pm at PlayFootball.net
